How To Engage Your Prospects

I Have A Very Clever Wife…

 

As a teacher, she knows how to engage her students. Shen tasked with presenting difficult concepts to her students that she had never learned very well, she  created models that simplify complex tasks for herself and for her students…

One brilliant example of this is when she needed to teach to her students what the ‘stamp act’ enacted in the early American colonies was all about. For this, she designed a class activity in which she gave each of her students a set number of marshmallows. Then, each time that the students had to turn in a paper, they were required to pay their teacher 4 marshmallows in order to receive a stamp and get credit for their work…

The students saw their treasured marshmallow stash shrink and their teachers stash grow. As intended, the students became more engaged in this activity because, as my wife said, “I knew that marshmallows were something that they valued.

Soon banners began to appear on students desk declaring how unfair their teacher was. If they could have voted against her, they would have. They kept asking “Why are you doing this to us?”

One day as their teacher was telling them about the unhappiness of the early colonists toward Great Britain, the light dawned and they declared, “O-h-h-h, now we know what you were doing to us!”…

 

Getting Your Prospects Engaged

 

Knowing what your prospects value and providing it to them is the key to building a business relationship with your target audience.  You and I can identify with the adage, ‘People love to buy but they hate to be sold’.  We also know that a little ‘marshmallow politics’  can go a long way toward getting us interested and engaged in what someone is offering to teach us.

You and I want to be taught in a way that not only recognizes what we value but can use what we value to help us learn. The same is true of your prospects. Just because we have something of value to offer does not mean that our prospects are engaged…

So, when you set up your marketing funnel, give your prospects what they value,  show them how that value can grow by engaging with you and then direct them to allow you to over deliver value to them so that your prospect is no longer a shopper but a buyer of your value…
